It is estimated that between the years of 2017-2021, sports tourism will have an upward trend of around 41 percent per year.
The global tourism economy is USD3.2 trillion (EUR2.7 trillion) while, the share of sports tourism amounts to USD250-375 billion (EUR211.6 to 317.4 million), or around 10 percent.
These impressive figures were presented at Sports Tourism Conference, which was successfully co-organised in February by University of Nicosia, CTO and Cyprus Sports Organisation.
The conference hosted top speakers from Cyprus and abroad, who emphasised the importance of the specific tourist industry and highlighted the great prospects of Cyprus to be established as one of the region’s top sports tourism destinations.
During the conference it was highlighted that for the years 2016-2017, a surprising increase in the sector was recorded in Cyprus with 40 percent.
The weather conditions prevailing on the island during the period November to March are the basic condition for winter sports training of athletes, while its geomorphology allows for a rapid rotation in the landscape.
